Why Personaltweetsonlyday on september 1, 2011?

Our sister organization NGO Designers against AIDS (DAA) has the Twitter account _DAA and they’re trying to organize #PersonalTweetsOnlyDay on September 1st. Here you can find out why.

I love Twitter as it’s fast, very international and sometimes hilariously funny. What I don’t like is that more and more companies latch on to this phenomenon, with the result that sometimes I’m wading through tons of thinly veiled -or not veiled at all- ads- hell, even celebrities now promote products (apart from their films/records) in their ‘personal’  Twitters! On the other hand, I also found out that when something huge happens in the world, such as the tsunami/earthquake in Japan, the London riots or Obama’s election, people group together and share more of their ideas and feelings- and that’s what I love about Twitter.

So I figured, why not create one day a year where everybody -individuals and businesses alike- only tweet personal stuff- or not tweet at all? I chose September 1 and started to send tweets with the hashtag #PersonalTweetsOnlyDay&’ – a day where you don’t promote yourself or your business, but tell the world a little bit more about yourself- from the profound ‘I overslept again this morning!’ to the more intimate ‘My boyfriend left me and I don’t think I’ll find another lover ever again’. My hope is that this will create a community feeling, with people wanting to help each other instead of selling each other even more stuff that they don’t really need. Please let us know what you think here and/or on Twitter, you’ll find us at _DAA!
